Journaling Maladaptive Daydreaming

How to Put Your Daydreams on Paper and Make Them a Reality

We all daydream. It's a normal part of the human experience. In fact, daydreaming can even be beneficial in moderation. It allows us to escape from the stressors of everyday life, explore different scenarios and possibilities, and connect with our innermost desires.

However, for some people, daydreaming can become excessive and start to interfere with daily life. This is known as maladaptive daydreaming, and it can be quite distressing. If you find that your daydreams are impacting your ability to function in daily life, there are things you can do to put them in paper so you can start working towards making them a reality.
Maladaptive daydreaming is excessive daydreaming that impairs everyday functioning. It was first formally recognized as a condition in 2002 by Israeli researchers who coined the term "maladaptive daydreaming." While it is not yet recognized as an official diagnosable condition by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), it is considered a type of dissociative disorder.

People with maladaptive daydreaming often engage in fantasy for hours at a time, sometimes even to the point of neglecting basic needs like food and sleep. They might have difficulty concentrating on work or schoolwork, and their relationships may suffer as a result of their preoccupation with their fantasy world.

How to Make Your Daydreams a Reality

If you find yourself daydreaming about things that you want to achieve, it's important to pay attention to those daydreams and figure out a way to make them a reality. Here's how you can do that.

Even if you scoff at the idea of making some of your dreams a reality by writing things down you may notice patters, perhaps your always hanging out with cool people doing fun things when in reality there are no real friendships in your life. You don't actually have to figure out how to be the coolest person in the universe you just need to plan how you will take steps to widen your social circle in a realistic way and your plan should focus on the underlying need core need not how you are specifically going to be the star of an after party following the your part performing rock gig of a life time.

1. Figure Out What You Want
The first step is to figure out what it is that you're daydreaming about. What is it that you want to achieve? Write it down in a journal or on a piece of paper so that you can refer back to it later.

2. Make a Plan
Once you've figured out what it is that you want, it's time to make a plan. Decide what steps you need to take in order to achieve your goal. Write down these steps in your journal so that you can see them all laid out in front of you. This will help you stay on track and avoid getting overwhelmed.

3. Take Action
The third and final step is to take action. This is where the rubber meets the road and where your dreams become reality. Start working towards your goal, one step at a time. As you check items off of your list, you'll get closer and closer to achieving your dream. Write Things Down in a Journal.

One way to help gain better control over maladaptive daydreaming is to write things down in a journal. This can help you better understand what triggers yourdaydreams and how they make you feel. You might also want to write down your daydreams themselves, including as much detail as possible. This can be helpful in understanding what elements of your fantasy world are most appealing to you.

Next to each bullet, write down the things that you can 1) Ideally 2) Realistically do to transform your daydream into reality. For example:
-I would like to travel more
1) I could save up money for travel
2) I could look into travel credit cards that offer points or miles that can be redeemed for travel expenses
3) I could research different destinations and plan out my dream trip
4) I could talk to my friends and family about taking a trip together
5) I could look into volunteering opportunities abroad
6) I could join a meetup group or online community dedicated to travel
7) I could start a blog or YouTube channel about my travels
8 )I could learn more about different cultures by reading books or watching documentaries

BTW learning about something is gaining knowledge, and who knows who you might meet that would allow you to make the most of that knowledge in a real travel opportunity after demonstrating your passion to them in conversation.

Afterwards, start implementing those changes to get closer to your dream life. If your goal is to travel more, start looking into ways that you can save money for travel expenses. Research different destinations and create a list of places you would like to visit. Join an online community dedicated to travel or start following travel bloggers and vloggers on social media. Learning about different cultures can also be helpful in sparking new ideas for travel destinations. The important thing is to take small steps towards making your dreams come true so that you don't become overwhelmed or discouraged.
